Duchenne muscular dystrophy - a researcher’s perspective

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most severe and common form of muscular dystrophy and one of the most commonly inherited disorders in man, with the risk of having an affected child being about 1 in every 3500 male births. This serious condition caused by mutations in the DMD gene which results in defects of a protein called dystrophin, the absence of which leads to progressive muscle weakness and wasting, even learning difficulties and/or behavioral problems as it affects the brain. Unfortunately, despite years of studies this pathology is still incurable and the disease mechanisms are not fully understood.
